Greater Fear American Gothic

Today, we’re looking at two paintings that depict the an experience of living in the United States: Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” (1930) and “Greater Than Fear”  (2017) by Obey (Shepard Fairey).

For this response, record a  2-minute video that explains why one of these images is “American.” Consider sharing the screen with the image so you can point to specifics while talking. You might find answering one or some of the following questions helpful:

  • What about the painting is similar or different from your experience in the US?
  • How do the human beings in the image depict the US?
  • What’s happening behind/around the human figure that contributes to the “Americanness” of this painting?
  • What is the purpose of the painting? What is it trying to say about the US?
