Mother Tongue

Today, we’re reading Amy Tan’s landmark essay, “Mother Tongue.” As you read the essay, consider the following discussion questions. Select one and answer it with details from the text in a two-minute response video:

  1.  “Mother Tongue” is the language used Tan’s mother. What is “Mother Tongue” for you? How is it similar or different to your experience?
  2. What does Tan’s interaction at the hospital with the CAT Scan reveal about people’s perception of non-native English speakers? How do you react to non-native speakers?
  3. To what extent is your language (e.g., word choice, accent, other language skills) influenced by your family, friends, region, or education?
  4. What does Tan’s experience tell us about the American experience?
