Few Talked about Race

Today, we’re examining Eligon’s The New York Times article, “Few Talked About Race at This School. Then a Student Posted a Racist Slur”. Read the article and answer the following questions:

  • What was the inciting event that caused Black students to raise concerns about racism? What makes you think that this wasn’t the first time something racially inappropriate was said/posted in the community? What examples does the article provide?
  • Why do you think schools like Owatonna avoid talking about race?
  • What solutions did the school district and community pursue to normalize discussing race relations?
  • How did your high school or community handle race? What could they have done better
