Today, we’re reading some selections from Frank & Treichler’s Language, Gender, and Professional Writing: Theoretical Approaches and Guidelines for Nonsexist Usage. As you formulate your response, you may find the following questions helpful:
- The first reading you’ll encounter discusses the history of pronoun use. What does this history of Old English pronouns reveal about English today? Why might studying the History of English be helpful to understanding gender and language usage?
- In the last half of the book, Frank and Treichler provide a number of suggestions for avoiding sexist language. How many of these suggestions are unconscious to you now? What aspects of gender neutral language usage do you find most challenging?
- In the past few years, the APA and MLA style guides have approved the use of a singular “they.” How has this been adopted in the PTC? Why is it important to use gender neutral pronouns?
